Information about Brittany

Some information about Brittany from Campsite Finder Online, your online guide to camping and caravanning.

Brittany, the westernmost province of France, has long attracted holiday makers, particularly from Britain. In part this is due to the ease of getting there with direct ferry links from the UK to ports such as St Malo and Roscoff. Brittany has much to offer as a holiday destination with plenty to do and see as well as a strong cultural identity and excellent food. Brittany`s celtic heritage is still a strong influence on the region and is noticeable in the local language, Breton, which has links to Cornish and Welsh.

The maritime tradition is strong in Brittany and there are a number of pretty fishing villages to visit in the region whilst camping in the area. Here you can sample some of the delicious local sea food. For oyster lovers there is one village in particular which is worth a visit. The locals of Cancale are well practiced in cultivating oysters - they have been doing it for hundreds of years. It is a must destination for anyone interested in the delicacy.

Brittany has long been associated with art and painters, influencing Gaugin amongst others. Those interested in art and painting will find much to occupy them in Brittany. These include specially designed art trails. Lovers of contemporary art are also well catered for. In particular they should visit Domaine de Kerguehennec. This is a centre for contemporary art offering a number of different things. These include exhibitions and artists residencies and a sculpture garden.

Those interested in gardening and gardens will find plenty to see and do in Brittany. The region has a wide range of gardens and parks ranging from botanical to ornamental. Flowers and plants vary from the local to the exotic. Two gardens which are well worth a visit include the Parc Botanique de haute Bretagne and les jardins de Broceliande, which is near Rennes. The former has 21 themed gardens and the latter is ideal for a family visit. Children will love the play activities located in the lovely flower gardens.

Many visitors are attracted by the beautiful countryside which includes wonderful canals and woods. Outdoor pursuits offer an excellent way of exploring. Cycling, hiking and horse riding are all very popular activities in Brittany. There are several trails set up to help you explore some of the outstanding areas. In addition there are a number of holiday operators who specialise in outdoor pursuits holidays and will offer you tailor-made itineraries designed to show you the hidden gems.

However it is probably the beaches for which Brittany is most famous. The region has 2,700 km of coastline and wonderful sandy beaches. Even if your holiday is not centred around the beach, no trip to Brittany would be complete without seeing some of the beautiful coastline and a walk along a beach. Lovers of water sports have plenty of choice from sailing to surfing. The beaches of Brittany also attract families as they are ideal for traditional bucket and spade holidays.
