Crumpet (August 13th, 2011)
We chose to stay at the Aboyne Loch Caravan Park for easy access to the Ballater games, and because it was considerably cheaper than other sites in the area.
You get what you pay for.
First the positives.
The loos and showers were dated, but very clean. The site is next to a very pretty loch.
Now the negatives. The welcome on arrival was cool. We were issued with one key to share between the three of us to access the mens or ladies showers and loos. This caused a considerable problem.
The site is largely for static caravans which were numerous and ugly, and not suitable for tents.
The pitches we were shown were small, very sloping and soggy. We chose the best, but it was wholly inadequate. The ground was sloping and uneven, the grass very sparse. There were rocks, and stones and gravel from the adjacent static caravan which had a large deck built around it. There was a lot of small rubbish on the pitch and an abandoned disposable BBQ along with dead pots of plants. We had to dig out three large tent pegs from the ground. There was food waste on the pitch...a large quantity of scattered sweetcorn and dry dog food which had soaked up the rain to resemble dog vomit. There was also chewing gum, and fish hooks.
I was reduced to tears.
There was old rubbish around the site which had clearly been left for some time.
The site is open to dog owners and although dogs should be kept on leads there was dog mess on the grass oposite our "pitch" and a woman allowed her dog to urinate on our tent in front of us!
It took a while to find the washing up area (no information is given on arrival) which turned out to be one sink in an outside area under nesting house martins...so with bird mess on it. Astonishingly there was a slot machine for hot water (tokens to be obtained from the office which was usually closed when we saw it).
At night we were kept awake from noise from the near by road which continued throughout the night.
We feel that Aboyne should not advertise itself as open to tents because the tent "pitches" were little more than unpleasant slots between static caravans. We left the site early.
